You may not have heard about the film
“The Golden Door” when
it arrived
in a limited number of theaters last year. But thankfully DVD delivers this terrific movie to the
masses. Italian director
Emanuele Crialese packs our bags for us and sends us on an immigration
journey with Salvatore, a Sicilian farmer and widower.
On this journey, we get a sense of the variety of reasons our
ancestors left their homeland, the struggles of the journey over sea,
and the realization that the journey would not end at the dock at Ellis
Island. In fact, The Golden Door is just another leg in their quest
for America. The immigrants
endure rounds of tests, hurried marriages and heart-wrenching decisions
that must be made before they can take the ferry to the mainland.
“The Golden Door” is in Italian. Don’t let this slow you down! Dialogue is not the star of this movie, so following the subtitles is not distracting. The real stars are the faces of the people, and the authentic settings they find themselves in. This is a must see!
Rated PG-13 for brief nudity in the Ellis Island examination scenes.
