THE KID

This month’s movie is a true classic that stands the test of time.  “The Kid” starring Charlie Chaplin and child actor Jackie Coogan is funny, witty, and pulls at the heart strings.  While many films from the silent era can seem corny or over dramatic, The Kid still seems fresh.  It’s one of those movies that if you could tie your kids or grandkids down to the sofa long enough to get them to watch, it would quickly win them over.  It’s getting them to sit down and watch that’s the hard part!

It can help to tell them that the adorable “kid” in the movie, grew up to play Uncle Fester in the television show The Adams Family.  Jackie Coogan was the ultimate child actor – cute as a button, too smart for the adults around him, and able to cry on cue.

In 1921 Charlie Chaplin was inspired by the recent tragic loss of his own child to make a movie that truly celebrated the bond between parent and child – whether that child was biological, or adopted.  And the musical score that you hear on the DVD ideally suits the humorous and tragic events he portrays.  Chaplin is not one of my favorite comedians, but he took an unusually long amount of time to create the film, and the quality shows.

You will likely be able to find a copy of the DVD at your local library or video store, as well as Netflix (online.)  If you’d like to own it for yourself, please use the Amazon links on this page to make your purchase, and you’ll be supporting the free podcast episodes at the same time.
